Seaford Beach Cabin Park Model

Statement

An alternative model to the status quo for dignified, sustainable living.

Diverse Homes for Diverse Needs

Cabin parks provide residents with a private, safe, and secure home avoiding the overcrowding and shared facilities common in other forms of crisis accommodation. At SHAC, we have spoken to many residents of various accommodation types about their experiences and have found that this privacy and independence is what sets apart the Cabin Park model as a better and more dignified solution for those in need.

Rooming House Conditions

Frankston City currently has 118 registered rooming houses, significantly more than neighbouring councils of similar size. Yet conditions inside many fall well short of adequate housing: 48% of residents rated their living conditions as "very poor, bad and unsafe" and over 40% of registered rooming houses operate in significant disrepair. With residents averaging a thirty-month stay, what is meant to be crisis accommodation has become a long-term reality for some of Frankston's most vulnerable people. [1][2][3]

An alternative model close to home

Seaford Beach Cabin Park consists of 35 dual-dwelling cabins, offering affordable and safe homes for residents in need. While SBCP used to cater more to residents requiring temporary accommodation for a few months while they get back on their feet, rising housing costs over the last decade have shifted this into permanent accommodation for many. At SHAC, we believe this serves as a leading example of a viable, affordable housing model to support the community's need for safe crisis accommodation.
